This May we are happy to bring you not one but two events as part of the inaugural Leeds Indie Food Festival. Our fist concerns itself with the creativity and inventiveness needed to set one menu apart from all others.
Described as “the most imaginative generator of haute cuisine on the planet”, elBulli was a Michelin three-star restaurant that overlooked the bay of Cala Montjoi on Spain’s Costa Brava. Before closing 2011, head chef Ferran Adrià and his team made some of the most intriguing discoveries in molecular gastronomy.
El Bulli: Cooking in Progress showcases the creative process employed in piecing together the elBulli menu. Closing its doors for six months of the year, Adrià along with Oriol Castro, Eduard Xatruch, Eugeni de Diego and Aitor Lozano relocate to Barcelona where they begin experimenting with a variety of foods and ingredients – the film begins with Adrià tasting a luminescent lolly created with fish oils. Nom?
Director Gereon Wetzel’s unobstrusive filmmaking style allows the meticulous investigative nature of the elBulli team to become as captivating as the delicacies they conjure up. Food science at its most artistic, dishes are cooked and prepared a dozen different ways before even passing a pair of lips. When they finally return to the restaurant, efforts are doubled and tripled before Adrià decides on a final menu.
We are happy to announce that local independent foodmakers Northern Bloc will be joining us for the evening and will be serving up samples and ready to answer any questions you may have about their ‘straight-talking’ ice cream. Formed by a group of friends who share a passion for ice cream, Northern Bloc have set out to explore and innovate using fresh, responsibly sourced ingredients.
“We believe ice cream should be enjoyed by everyone and so our menu always includes flavours which are dairy free, low fat and vitamin rich. It should be extraordinarily simple and made with real, fresh ingredients; served alone or paired with other food and drink, it is equally sublime. Working closely with local suppliers ensures we know exactly where our produce comes from and that it is always of the best quality.”
Two scoops, please!
The film will screen alongside The Gallery’s latest exhibition &TOTALLY TUTTI FRUTTI_, showcasing images from Bompas & Parr’s food-as-art book ‘Tutti Frutti’ and printed recipes from Leeds own online food journalists Food&_.
El Bulli: Cooking in Progress screens at The Gallery at Munro House in Leeds city centre on Thursday 7 May at 7PM. Accompanying the feature presentation will be a selection of short films as well as the previously mentioned offering of Northern Bloc ice cream.
